Would you like to learn more about the natural areas around Bassendean and contribute to their re-vegetation and restoring biodiversity with native plants?

Come volunteer with us!

You will work with a small team at the BPG GroCentre preparing seedlings and also re-vegetating riverbank and wetland areas. BPG undertakes native plant propagation, weed removal and planting activities throughout the year.

No skills are required and tools are provided. Volunteers and members are covered by BPG’s insurance policy.

When do we work?

BPG is a community volunteer group that operates on a part-time basis. Plantings in bushland are generally carried out on Saturday or Sunday mornings, throughout the rainy season: June onwards, to as late as September, depending on the rains. We also undertake occasional plantings at the river’s edge at other times of year. These plantings are timed to the river tides.

Activities at the Gro Centre are year round. We have a regular Wednesday session to manage the nursery. This includes some potting and propagation, thinning plants, maintenance and improvements - for example, this year we have put up several new planting racks and expanded the reticulation system.

Over the warm months, there are usually a few Saturday or Sunday activity mornings, to plant seeds and seedlings. These need several months to grow, so that they are ready to plant out in winter. We may also hold activity mornings to wash pots or have busy bees.

Other activities take place from time to time throughout the year, such as weeding, staking out areas which have been planted, and visiting areas of previous plantings to see how they are doing, and where we can plant for the following season.

Special skills in demand

You can simply come along to any of the plantings. But we are always keen to meet volunteers who might be willing to take on some additional responsibilities, for example:

  • Helping to manage an activity morning – particularly with set up and pack up, before and after.

  • Volunteers who have capacity to tow the BPG planting trailer for planting mornings.

  • Committee positions

  • Website maintenance
